College Athletes Should Get Paid free essay sample

Pay for Play Today, sports are no longer fun and games, sports are a business, and college sports are no different. Division I college sports provide a huge source of universities’ income. The school receives money from ticket sales, television contracts, and sport-related merchandise, along with many other sports related revenue builders. The athletes on the other hand, receive their scholarship and little more. While the idea of receiving a free college education is something few would complain about; when the issue is more closely examined it becomes evident that it is not enough. Universities are exploiting athletes, and recently the problems that this creates have become more prominent. More and more athletes are now leaving school early to enter the professional leagues in order to make money. There have also been more reports of violations surrounding university boosters and alumni paying players. Furthermore, athletes have been accused of making deals with gamblers and altering the outcome of games. All of these problems could be minimized, if not completely eliminated, by adopting a program for compensating student athletes. College athletes are exploited by their schools, which make millions of dollars off of them. This leads to violations, students leaving college early, and student-athletes that cannot even afford to do anything that their sport doesn’t sponsor. The NCAA and professional leagues can work together to institute a plan to compensate these athletes and remedy all these problems. Student athletes need money just like any other college students, and many of them need it even more. According to Steve Wulf, many college athletes come from disadvantaged backgrounds (94). This means that while the free tuition is nice, they are still going to need money for other expenses that every college student faces. The NCAA finally realized this recently and decided to allow athletes to have a job earning up to $2000 during the school year (Greenlee 63). This, while well intended, is impossible for many, if not the majority of college athletes. As Greenlee states, The hours athletes would spend working at a job are already spoken for (63). The sport they play is their job; it takes up as much time, if not more, as the normal student’s job at the cafeteria or student center, yet they do not get paid. The schools have to make up for this by finding some way to compensate these athletes. The main reason behind not giving college athletes some form of compensation is that college athletes must be amateurs and if they are paid they will lose their status as an amateur. Amateurs are defined in the dictionary as an athlete who has never accepted money, or who accepts money under restrictions specified by a regulatory body, for participating in a competition. Many people say the fact that college athletes are amateurs and not paid gives college sports their appeal (Bruinis 1). However, these rules have been extended so far that athletes can barely get a check from their grandmother in the mail without red flags going up. Under the current rules, universities and colleges cannot recruit athletes who have competed with professionals, accepted money from benefactors to be used for things such as private high school tuition, accepted prize money won in competitions, or played for money in any league. Furthermore, current college athletes cannot be paid for giving lessons in their sport or accept grants from the U. S. Olympic committee (Suggs 54). A player cannot do anything that might jeopardize his or her status as an amateur. This rule is somewhat farfetched, even affecting work outside of the sports world. For example, Darnell Autry, University of Northwestern running back and theater major, went to Italy over the summer and appeared in a motion picture. He could not be paid for his services in the movie because it would damage his amateur status (Greenlee 63). This had nothing to do with college football, yet it was still a violation of NCAA rules. The amateur rules only create more problems and put an infinite number of restrictions on student athletes that just are not fair. Another major argument for not compensating college athletes is the fact that we have never done so in the past. Also, at a time of economic crisis, most Universities have other things to worry about, especially because there is no system in place currently that allows student athletes to receive money. The comparison of what student athletes get versus what they give makes it very obvious that they are exploited. Many of the athletes receive their education free, which can range from about $10,000 to more than $40,000 a year. However, college programs generate thousands more off of the athlete. Recently, the University of Notre Dame signed a five-season 38 million dollar contract with NBC for its home football games (Wulf 94). If there were 100 full scholarship football players for Notre Dame, that would equal $380,000 per player just from the TV revenues, when the limit of scholarships is usually around eighty. This oes not even take into account the ticket revenues, championship or bowl game payouts, and merchandise sold because of the players. Notre Dame is not the only school making million dollar deals like this one. The NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) makes approximately 242 million dollars off of TV revenues each year, and that number shouldn’t do anything but rise (Bruinius 1). When college athletes only receive a scholarship usually somewhere in the ball park o f $30,000 depending on the school, it would appear that since they can bring in up to 13 million, college athletes are being exploited. The simple fact that the colleges are making millions off of these athletes means that they are exploiting them and the NCAA constitution proves this. This constitution states that, student athletes shall be amateurs†¦and should be protected from exploitation by professional and commercial enterprises. The problem with this rule is that it fails to acknowledge that university athletic programs are commercial enterprises, especially in recent times. These athletes aren’t amateurs any more but professional athletes some believe. Jeff Brown, author of Compensation of the Student-Athlete: Preservation of Amateurism, says, â€Å"Critics of the National Collegiate Athletic Association’s (NCAA) amateurism rules argue that amateurism is an outdated ideal that no longer has a place in college athletics. The rules that worked back in the day are not working today. The objective of college athletic programs is to generate money (Murphy and Pace 168). If colleges are recognized in this way as commercial enterprises, it appears that colleges are violating the NCAA constitution. This means that college athletes are exploited even by universities’ own definition. It is exploitation in a form as obvious as any other form of servitude. Former executive director of the NCAA Walter Byers states, The coaches own the athletes’ feet, the colleges own the athletes’ bodies, and the supervisors retain the large rewards. That reflects a neoplantation mentality on the campuses that is not appropriate at this time of high dollars (Wulf 94). In other words, Byers is saying the universities are using these athletes for a type of slave labor. The big business is making a lot of money, and the ones who make it possible are not seeing a cent of the revenue they generate. Exploitation is a problem in itself, but it also causes many others, and these are increasing at a fast rate. One of these problems is the increase in NCAA violations by student athletes, in particular, gambling. The athletes need money and they can get it by making deals with gamblers. Athletes agree to alter the outcome of the game by playing poorly (shaving points), thus allowing the gamblers to pick the other team and make money.

The final rule is, make your product different from the competition. This means a business has achieved the goal of their product being different to other businesses and is something people want to buy. It might be that your product has a unique design feature, a reputation for reliability or a cool brand image. If you dont have product differentiation, people think your product is the same as everyone else and will only buy it if its cheaper, which means less profit for you. I have advised Strobe Leisure to make their product as original as possible to allow them to make as much profit as possible and become established as quickly as possible. There are five different Pricing strategies which Strobe Leisure can use when they use pricing. The first pricing strategy is Penetration; this is where a firm charges a very low price when the product is new to get lots of people interested in it. When this low price is below cost it is called loss leading. Once the product has become established the firm will increase the price. Strobe Leisure could use this method by selling their food and drinks at a low price to try and stop people bringing their own food and drink in the cinema. The second strategy is Skimming; is the opposite of Penetration pricing. Firms charge a high price to begin with this helps make the product desirable to people with large incomes. When the product has become established the firm will lower the price to help it become a mass-market product. This happens a lot with consumer goods based on new technology such as digital TVs. Strobe Leisure could use this method if they have exclusive showing of films for a VIP night as people will be willing to pay more money. The third strategy Destroyer pricing, is also known as predatory pricing. This is where firms charge low prices that they know are unprofitable for their competitors. Once they have driven competitors out of the market they will raise prices. The fourth strategy is Price Discrimination. This is where firms charge different prices to different consumers for the same product. A good example is cheaper rail travel for students and OAPs. Strobe Leisure could use this method by having peak and non-peak time; they will charge higher price in peak as this is the only time those people could visit the cinema. And finally the fifth strategy is Competition pricing, this is where the firm has to charge similar prices to other firms. It happens when there is lots of choice and not much product differentiation like petrol. Strobe Leisure could use this method for selling their tickets as from my market research I found cinemas sell their tickets at similar prices. It is important for Strobe Leisure to get their price right, because the price is one of the reasons why people dont go to cinema that often. The price is also what helps customers decide if they want to go there of somewhere that has cheaper prices. Strobe Leisure has to look at the prices of their competition. Although from looking at the prices from Strobe Leisure it looks like they will not be making as much profit as their competitors short term, but they will long term. Having little cheaper prices will make a big difference to the customers, the lower prices may also encourage people to visit the cinema more often, so this will help Strobe Leisure make more of a profit than its competitors. The third thing I am going to recommend is Promotion, I thought of many different ways to advertise Strobe to get it recognised, and to get people interested. To get anyone to visit Strobe Leisure cinema, Strobe Leisure needs to be advertised. There are many methods, in which Strobe Leisure can advertise, such as radio adverts, posters displayed on billboards and transport, newspaper, leaflets and national press. I found out from my questionnaire most people take notice of the television adverts. The films will be advertised in the TV but I think that Strobe Leisure should use a local newspaper as in my Market Research people said they found about their cinema in the newspaper. Strobe Leisure should have a membership card; this is offered to everyone free of charge on their first visit to Strobe Leisure Cinema. Every time a cardholder visits the cinema, they will get points to put on to their card. No points will be given if the cardholder forgets their card, because the card must be swiped into the machine to add the point on. When the cardholders get some points in his card, they will get voucher for 1 bag of sweets etc. the reason for Strobe Leisure having the point membership card is that the customers get something to encourage them to visit the cinema more often. This will increase the number of customers going to visit Strobe Leisure Cinema. The customers need to have something to encourage them to visit Strobe Leisure, as Strobe Leisure will be giving them something back. Special offers get people interested, and give them more of a reason to go there. I got this from my questionnaire; most people wanted something back for giving the cinema their custom. Strobe Leisure should not Advertise their company and deals on the radio, as this is also for people that are not local, they would not be able to get where Strobe Leisure is, so the advert would be a waste of money. Strobe Leisure should advertise in the local newspaper, and they cam include the film times in the paper as well. Strobe Leisure Should open the their Cinema in a town like London, as this is better for the customers as it will be easy for people to get to, more people will go to the cinema at the last minute. They should sell their tickets in the internet because more people use internet and it is easier to book films in the internet as I asked some people in my questionnaire. The specials offers will be short term, as the customers will get bored of them. Special offers must be changed regularly so that the customers have something new. The club card will be long term, but the deals will change, this is because the free gifts will be changed very season. Strobe Leisure cannot change location, which is long term, because it will cost too much money to move places and people might get confused if the cinema keep changing. J.B Priestleys An Inspector calls Act One Free Online Research Papers â€Å"An Inspector Calls† is a play set in 1912. J.B Priestley wrote it in 1945. The writer’s reputation is significant because he was a social commentator and the play has a social message. The main themes of the play are capitalism is bad, and that everyone in society has a duty to each other. The play is also concerned with guilt and responsibility. The writer sets the scene very clearly, making sure he gets the message across that they are a well off family. The atmosphere at the start of the play is happy and cheerful as they are all celebrating Gerald and Sheila’s engagement, we can tell they were happy because the stage directions tell us Gerald and Mrs. B were â€Å"smiling† at times and Sheila was being â€Å"half serious half playful. The stage directions at the start of the play also tell us that Mr. Birling is a â€Å"heavy looking, rather portentous man in his middle fifties with fairly easy manners but rather provincial in his speech†, this suggests that his character is very self involved. During one of Mr. Birling’s speeches about Gerald and Sheila’s engagement he says to Gerald â€Å"Your father and I have been friendly rivals in business for some time now – though Crofts Limited are both older and bigger than Birling and Company – and now you’ve brought us together, and perhaps we may look forward to the time when Crofts and Birlings are no longer competing but are working together – for lower costs and higher prices†. This tells us that his character may be at sometimes more interested in business than his family. The speeches that Mr. Birling makes are most of the time long, boring and show that he is egotistical. His speeches reveal a great deal about the social context. They include allot of dramatic irony for example when Mr. Birling says â€Å"Why. A friend of mine went over this new liner last week – the Titanic – she sails next week – forty six thousand eight hundred tons – forty six thousand eight hundred tons – New York in five days – and every luxury – and unsinkable†. This is dramatic irony because the audience know that titanic sunk on its first sail this creates tension and makes Mr. Birling look foolish. I think Mr. Birling is very much in control at the start of the play because to his family he is a â€Å"practical hard headed businessman† as he always reminds them. The language in the stage directions on page 10 shows the mood has changed because Gerald and Mr. Birling create tension by talking about why a police inspector might be there, which makes Eric start to worry. Mr. Birling says, â€Å"I’m still on the Bench. It may be something about a warrant.† And then Gerald says â€Å"(lightly) Sure to be. Unless Eric’s been up to something. (Nodding confidentially to Birling.) And that would be awkward, wouldn’t it† Then Eric says, â€Å"(who is uneasy, sharply) Here, what do you mean?† Gerald replies, â€Å"(lightly) Only something we were talking about when you were talking about when you were out. A joke really.† Then in response Eric says, â€Å"(still uneasy) Well, I don’t think it’s very funny†. It shows the mood has changed because the stage directions tell us that Eric also becomes â€Å"uneasy†. We can also tell that the party has been interrupted because the ch aracters stop the cheerful and playful conversation and become more serious as Br. Birling and Gerald begin to talk about why the Inspector may have called. This conversation between Mr. Birling, Gerald and Eric creates tension because Mr. Birling and Gerald are talking to each other about Eric, which makes Eric very anxious because he overhears. The dialogue on page 10 reveals that Mr. Birling’s character is not very close to his son. When the Inspector enters Mr. Birling says, â€Å"Have a glass of port – or a little whisky?† this is to break the ice, as Mr. Birling has never met the Inspector before. Mr. Birling also asks, â€Å"You’re new are you?† Mr. Birling says and then leads on to say â€Å"I was an alderman for years – and Lord Mayor two years ago – and I’m still on the Bench – so I know the Brumley police officers pretty well – and I thought I’d never seen you before† he said this to let the Inspector know that Mr. Birling had some authority to try and scare the Inspector. The Inspector uses dramatic language to shock the Birling family of the girl’s death, He says, â€Å"she was in great agony†. The stage directions tell us that Mr. Birling is impatient; this suggests that he could be worried or possibly guilty about something. Mr. Birling responds to the questions quite impatiently because he is scared of what the inspector might find out. Mr. Birling is against collective responsibility because he feels that he is above the problems of people of a lower social class. He says â€Å"put it like that, there’s something in what you say. Still, I can’t accept any responsibility. Mr Birling starts to show his annoyance when the Inspector starts questioning him He says, â€Å"I’ve half a mind to report you†, this also shows ho easily agitated he is. When the Inspector arrives Mr. Birling becomes defensive as the Inspector tricks him into revealing information. He also gets very agitated when the Inspector twists his words. His attitude reflects the key themes of the play, which are responsibility and guilt. Priestly achieved a simple yet interesting display of Mr. Birling’s character by showing how mixed up his priorities are and by showing his attitude to other characters.
